A pool swimmer moving to open water carries a set of assumptions that were all true in a pool and are all false outside one. Naming them is more useful than a list of tips, because the assumptions are what produce the surprises.
Five assumptions that stop being true
1. Somebody has treated this water. Nobody has. There is no circulation loop, no filtration, no disinfection and no dosing. What there is instead is a classification system for designated bathing waters, which is a very different thing: a periodic assessment of water quality over a season rather than a treatment process. 2. Somebody is watching. Sometimes true, often not. Lifeguard cover at open water sites is seasonal, partial and site specific. Away from patrolled beaches and organised sessions, nobody is watching. The Royal National Lifeboat Institution, water safety publishes water safety guidance built around exactly this.
3. The temperature is comfortable and stable. British open water is cold for most of the year and can be far colder below the surface than at it. Temperature is the single most important variable in open water and it does not behave the way a heated pool does.
4. I can see where I am going and where the bottom is. Frequently neither. Visibility in inland water in particular can be close to nil, which affects entry, exit, navigation and the ability of anybody to find you.
5. The exposure is the same as a pool, outdoors. It is worse in a specific way: much longer duration, glare along the surface rather than from above, wind, and no shade anywhere.
The single largest change is not the cold. It is that nobody has checked anything on your behalf.
Cold water is the dominant hazard and it is not a sun issue
We are going to be careful here, because cold water is a safety subject with its own institutional guidance and it is not this publication's field of expertise. Cold water shock is a real and well documented phenomenon and the RNLI publishes guidance on it, including the Float to Live message. Anyone swimming in open water in the United Kingdom should read that guidance from the source rather than from a summary.

We are not going to paraphrase safety guidance, because a paraphrase loses precisely the details that matter. If you swim in open water, read it at source and read it before you need it.
What we can usefully add is the interaction that this site exists to talk about: cold changes the sun problem, and it changes it in an unhelpful direction. Cold removes the heat signal. A person swimming in cold water on a bright day feels cold, not hot, and will stay out for far longer than they would on a warm beach. The exposure continues regardless.
Glare, and why open water is worse than a pool for it
An open water swimmer looks along the surface, not down at a tiled floor. Sighting means lifting the head and looking into the reflected path, repeatedly, for the whole swim. The reflected component discussed in reflection and the water surface is therefore not incidental: it is directly in the line of sight for the entire session.
This has two consequences. Practically, glare makes sighting hard, which is a navigation and therefore a safety issue. And for exposure, the face is angled up at the water surface repeatedly, which is exactly the geometry that produces the burn pattern under the chin, on the nose and on the ears. Duration is the underestimated variable
A pool session is bounded by the lane hire. An open water swim is bounded by how long you feel like being in, and around it sits the getting ready, the wetsuit, the waiting for the group, the swim, the getting out, the standing about shivering, and the tea afterwards. On a summer morning that is easily three hours outdoors, most of it with very little clothing and none of it in shade because there is no shade anywhere.

Look at how much of that is not the swim. Sun protection planning that covers only the swim covers perhaps a third of the exposure.
What is the environmental question here?
Air quality and water treatment. A controlled, tested, supervised environment where somebody else has done the checking and the main unknowns are the ones you can ask about.
Ultraviolet is not a factor. The temperature is set. The bottom is visible. Somebody is watching.
Everything is different. In an outdoor pool: exposure, timing, shade, and treated water. In open water: exposure, glare, cold, visibility, currents or flow, and water quality nobody has dosed.

What to check, in order
This is not a safety course and it is not a substitute for one. It is the sequence that this publication's remit covers, with the safety specific parts pointed at the bodies that publish them.
- Is this a designated bathing water, and what is its classification? See bathing water classification. This is a check you can do from your phone before you leave.
- Is there any recent pollution notice or discharge warning? Same sources.
- Is it patrolled, and when? The Royal National Lifeboat Institution, water safety is the reference for lifeguarded beaches and for what a patrol actually covers.
- What is the water temperature and what is the plan if it is colder than expected? Read the RNLI guidance before you need it.
- Where is the exit? Decided before entry, not during.
- What is the exposure plan for the whole session, not just the swim? Which is the part this site is actually about.
Whether this open water swim goes ahead
Owns far more than in a pool, and this is the defining difference. Owns checking the classification and any notices, owns the decision to enter, owns the exit plan, owns telling somebody where they are, and owns their own exposure across the whole session rather than just the swim.
An organised session moves much of that back to the leader: the site assessment, the water quality check, the safety cover, the briefing, the head count, the recall signal, and the decision to cancel. This is a substantial responsibility and it is covered in open water groups and supervision.
There may not be one. Where there is a beach operator, a landowner, a lake operator or a local authority, they own site safety information, signage, any lifeguard provision and any facilities. Where there is not, nobody owns it, and that absence is itself the thing to notice.

Summary
Open water swimming is worth doing and this is not an argument against it. It is an argument for noticing which of your pool assumptions you have brought with you. Nobody dosed this water, nobody is necessarily watching, the temperature is a hazard in its own right, the glare is in your eyes for the whole swim, and the session is far longer than the swim. Read the cold water guidance at source, check the classification before you go, and plan the whole session rather than the swim.
