This article sits on a genuine tension, and the useful thing is to state it rather than pick a side. Personal care products, sunscreen included, add to the chemical load a pool has to treat. Sun protection outdoors matters. Both are true. Almost all the published material on this subject picks one and ignores the other, which produces advice that is either chemically illiterate or leaves people unprotected.
What comes off a swimmer
When a person enters water, material on the surface of their skin and hair begins to leave it immediately. Some of it dissolves, some of it emulsifies, and some of it forms a film that ends up on the water surface and on the tiles at the waterline. Over a session, most of what was applied to exposed skin ends up in the water.
The categories that matter:
- Natural material. Skin cells, skin oils, sweat, hair. This arrives whatever anyone does and is the baseline the plant is designed for.
- Leave on skincare. Moisturisers, body lotions, oils, serums. Frequently heavy and frequently applied immediately before leaving the house.
- Hair products. Conditioners, oils, styling products, dry shampoo. These are designed to resist rinsing, which is exactly the property that makes them persistent in a pool.
- Deodorants and antiperspirants. Designed to stay on skin.
- Make up. Especially long wear formulations, which are again designed to resist water.
- Sunscreen. Water resistant formulations are, by design, formulated to remain on skin in water. That property is why they work and it is also why they do not simply disappear.
What that does to the treatment system
Three effects, in rough order of how much operators care about them.
It consumes disinfectant. Organic material reacts with free chlorine. The chlorine spent on breaking down a moisturiser is chlorine not available to disinfect. Where the material contains nitrogen, the products of that reaction are the combined chlorine compounds discussed in the chloramines article.
It loads the filtration. Oils, waxes and mineral particles are exactly the kind of fine suspended material that filtration and coagulation exist to remove. More of it means filters working harder, being cleaned more often, and a greater chance of cloudy water when the load spikes.
It leaves visible residue. The film at the waterline, the scum in the overflow channel and the greasy feel on tiles in a busy pool are largely product and skin oil. That residue is also a cleaning and slip risk problem on the surrounds.
Do not walk away from this thinking a swimmer wearing sunscreen is sabotaging a pool. A single swimmer's contribution is trivial. The effect is a bather load effect: it matters at the scale of a busy public session or a large squad, and it matters at the margin, on the day a pool is already working hard. The operational answer is a system that assumes it and a pre swim shower that reduces it. It is not vigilance about individuals.
The sunscreen question, resolved by environment
This is where the two devices of this publication earn their place, because the answer genuinely inverts depending on where you are.
Should I wear sunscreen to swim?
At an indoor pool, ultraviolet is essentially not the issue. There is no meaningful UV exposure in a normal enclosed pool hall, so sun protection is not doing anything useful there.
That makes the calculation one sided. Applying sunscreen before an indoor swim adds load to the water and buys nothing. If you arrived with sunscreen on from earlier in the day, shower it off. This is covered fully in sunscreen at an indoor pool.
Outdoors, ultraviolet is very much the issue, and it compounds: long dwell time, minimal clothing, reflection off the water, and often the middle of the day. Sun protection is worth doing and the contribution to bather load is a cost worth paying.
The sequencing is what makes it work: apply well before you swim so it has bonded to skin rather than sitting on it, and follow the reapplication guidance from the NHS and Cancer Research UK, sun, UV and cancer.
Note what this does not say. It does not say sunscreen is bad for pools and should be avoided. It says that indoors it does nothing for you, so there is no trade off to make, and outdoors it does a great deal for you, so the trade off resolves in its favour. Two different answers to the same question because the environment is different.
Sequencing, which is the practical answer outdoors
Product applied and immediately submerged behaves differently from product applied with time to settle. General sun protection guidance from the NHS and Cancer Research UK is to apply generously before going out, well ahead of exposure, and to reapply regularly and after being in water. That guidance exists for protection reasons. It also happens to reduce how much simply washes off into the pool in the first minutes.
The practical sequence at an outdoor pool, for an adult or for a group leader running children:
- Apply before leaving home or at the venue well before entering the water, not on the pool edge.
- Shower before entering the water, as the venue asks. Yes, even having applied sunscreen. A shower removes surface residue and sweat, and it does not undo protection that has settled into the skin the way a heavy soap scrub would.
- Reapply after getting out and towelling, before the next period out of the water, following the product instructions.
- Use shade and timing as the primary tool rather than relying on the product to carry the whole load. See timing an outdoor session.

Hair products and swim caps
Hair products deserve a separate mention because they are among the most persistent contributors and because the mitigation is easy. Products designed to stay in hair through a day are designed to resist water. Rinsing hair thoroughly before swimming removes a large proportion of the loose product, and a well fitted cap reduces both what leaves the hair and what the hair picks up. Reducing what enters the water at a busy session
Owns the shower, the toilet trip, the decision to swim without heavy product on, and rinsing hair. Small actions individually, and the only lever the swimmer holds. Worth doing properly rather than symbolically.
Owns the briefing. A coach or teacher who tells a squad to shower properly before poolside gets a different outcome from one who assumes it. With children, owns making the pre swim routine part of the session rather than an optional extra, and owns building enough time into the session for it.
Owns whether a pre swim shower is realistically possible: working showers, warm water, a layout that routes swimmers past them rather than around them, and signage that explains why rather than just instructing. Owns the plant capacity to handle the load that still gets through.

The summary a swimmer can act on
Indoors, leave the sun protection off, because it buys nothing and costs the water something. Shower before you get in, properly and with the intention of removing product rather than as a token gesture. Use the toilet first. Rinse your hair or wear a cap. Outdoors, protect yourself, and do the same shower. None of this is fussy and all of it takes about two minutes.
And keep the proportion in mind. The operator's plant, ventilation, dilution regime and testing carry most of this problem. What a swimmer adds is real, is worth reducing, and is not the main event.
